A Labor Day Meditation

“Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that He may instruct us in His ways, and we may walk in His paths.”  Isaiah 2:3

As I read this verse in the Office of Readings on this Labor Day Holiday, 2010, the words, “Climb the Lord’s mountain” struck me, and I thought, “It’s hard work to climb a mountain!”  If you try to run up the mountain without stopping, or even try to walk but at the same time talk and talk unceasingly, you run out of oxygen and find yourself in dire straits!

Similarly, it isn’t always “easy” to do the Lord’s will.  As we struggle up the mountain of our spiritual journey, it’s necessary to take time to pause and be still, to receive the “oxygen” of God’s Word to revive our souls.  May this day be a time to slow down and breathe deeply the Spirit of our Lord, so that we may have the strength with God’s grace to continue on toward the summit.

Happy Labor Day!
